135th Kentucky Derby- Hats and Hysteria

On Saturday I covered the 135th Kentucky Derby. It was quite a time to say the least and it was very eye opening. The past four Derby's that I have attended I was a face in the sea of madness that is called the infield. I had never been in the paddock or the grandstand at the Derby so it was different to say the least. I was assigned to shoot a 50 picture gallery, yes 50, over the "Hats of the Derby," it was a fun time. After I transmitted my Hats I decided to go where I go every Derby, the infield. As I walked around the infield by myself I watched everyone around me. It's a different world, people dressed in expensive suits and dresses mixed with the people in their underwear covered in mud laughing and drinking together.

As a native of Kentucky, hearing "My Old Kentucky Home" and watching the grandstand on the track was a great and surreal feeling. The day was stressful but great fun. Feel free to comment. Cheers!

"Total chaos, no way to see the race, not even the track...nobody cares. Big lines at the outdoor betting windows, then stand back to watch winning numbers flash on the big board, like a giant bingo game."
- Hunter S. Thompson, 1970
