Going for a change...

I had my fair share of technical issues over here on Blogger and decided to make a change. For the time being, I’ll be posting my blog updates on Tumblr. Go ahead and check it out!

My Old Kentucky Home

Like many Louisvillians and Kentuckians, the Kentucky Derby is one of the highlights of the year. Even though I don't live there anymore, I've loved going back there for the past two years. I started going in high school, then started to shoot the derby for the CJ when I was in college and while I was freelancing. Even though I love shooting it, experiencing it as a spectator is quite special. This year was great. It was beautiful weather, there were great people, and I even won the Derby race. It was a great weekend to be a Kentuckian.

Even though I was there for fun, I brought along my Fuji and shot for myself. Here some of my favorites from the weekend. Until next year.

The Daily News Cycle

I went through some recent work for a blog update and put together a mish mash of work from the daily news cycle of news, sports, and features. These assignments are never the same, but follow that cycle that I, and my fellow daily photographers go through. Thanks for looking!

One puppy for good measure...

Along The Fence

Like many photographers, I wander when I'm on assignment. Recently, I wandered along the fence of the tennis portion of a Special Olympics event and came across these two photos. It's good to wander. At least for me, it keeps things interesting.

Playing Tourist

It's a busy time of the year in Naples. One of the biggest draws to tourists is the Naples pier at sunset. I've posted my fair share of photos from the pier on this blog, but why not a handful more? I had the day off, and this afternoon I figured it would be fun to do some people watching at the pier. Here are some of the ones I liked. Thanks for looking.

Saved By HIV

When I heard Bobbi Garcia's story, I was immediately intrigued and looked forward to meeting her. Barbara "Bobbi" Garcia has lived with HIV for 15 years. Before her diagnosis, she was a crack addict, working at a local bar where she'd also find her clients as a prostitute in Immokalee, where she moved to in 1974. She needed the extra cash to pay for her crack habit where she was spending at least $100 a day. She was spiraling out of control and after burning herself smoking crack she knew she needed to see a doctor. After a checkup and the usual tests, she found out she contracted HIV. When she found out her diagnosis in 1999, she immediately started treatment, gave up drugs and found God, who she says is everything in her life.

I've met many people who have dug themselves out of addiction. A lot of them have found religion to help with their transformation. None of them are like Bobbi though. After her telling me how far gone she was, It was amazing to see how far she had come and how much her life revolves around God. After talking with her about her life before she found out she had HIV and her life after, it seemed like HIV had saved her life. I know how that sounds, but when you think of it, if she continued with her lifestyle, who knows how long she could've had.

I was only able to spend a short time with Bobbi because she became the face of a story we did on a traveling "Faces of HIV" art exhibit. Her story goes deeper than living with HIV though. She now mentors young women who are leading a life like she was, helps with stewardship with her church (pictured above), and holds a knowledge of Immokalee that many might not have. Either way, I'll be spending more time with Bobbi in the near future. Until next time, here are some of my favorites from my short time with Bobbi.
